There were a couple places where trail finding was difficult. Going up Bennett Street trail towards Flat Mountain Pond trail, after the trail turns left and follows the stream on the right-hand side, it then crosses the stream at some point and climbs up to the trail junction. This stream crossing point wasn't well marked and we spent about 10 minutes following herd paths and backtracking until we saw a barely visible blue blaze on a tree stump and a measly cairn on the other side. Coming down Flat Mountain Pond trail on the eastern side of the pond (towards Whiteface Intervale) going south we missed the turn to cross Whiteface River right after the wilderness boundary sign. There is a poorly maintained sign right after the wilderness sign that says to cross the river to the parking lot. We thought it was pointing straight towards a highly trafficked herd path, which we continued on the wrong side of the river for about 0.5 miles and eventually turned into a wide road-like trail into a wide open field, which was obviously way off trail. Even after backtracking and crossing the river in the correct place we still spent about 10 minutes finding the yellow blaze. |

Nice overnighter at Flat Mountain Pond. Probably about 10-15 staying at the pond Saturday night, all with nice fires ablaze. Some annoying trail maintenance rants above. |
