PLENTY of parking at the Proctor Academy Fieldhouse. However, they have added a few buildings recently so the trail access looked a bit different. Still same access - go up the road towards the tennis courts and see the Ragged Mtn Trail sign. |

Always fun to re-explore this side of Ragged Mtn. Took the usual route up to the ridge (Ragged Mtn Trail), then took Blueberry Patch Ski Trail to the top of Upper Easy Winder - follow the regular ski trail at the big left turn, then, where that really drops off, head to right into woods for the very hidden brushy start of the "historic" Wilson's Wonder Ski Trail which is signed. There is also a soda can on a small scrubby tree which is kind of hidden. The flagging that was once there is possibly down on the ground.
From there, follow the fairly obvious but pretty overgrown ski trail (generally about 8-10' wide) - lots of birches and hobble bush. Trail heads generally southeast. It looks in places like a skidder road but is very clearly an old ski trail. Mountain is always on the left generally. There are still occasional blazes and signs during the descent. About halfway down it connects to the Ragged Mtn hiking trail which apparently follows Wilson's Wonder down to where the Ragged Mtn hiking trail heads into the woods to the right... here's where I believe the old ski trail continued straight on an old road, eventually coming to a high sign overhead for the old ski trail. Follow that old road to the fieldhouse area where unnamed connecting trails bring you back to the field house.
Last time I explored Wilsons was around 2016. Might be XC-skiable but it is very grown in. Not really steep enough for downhill skiing but I know that's how it was originally used - by Proctor ski racers to get back to Proctor from the Ragged ski area. |
