Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking area pretty solid and vegetation not too high yet. Room for quite a few cars; there was only 1 when I got there relatively late, but 6 or so on my return.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy rock steps.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is wide, open and generally easy hiking. One big blowdown is a well trimmed duckunder, there are a few stepover stems and a couple where the branches are in the trail. The trail missed the big rains apparently,so it wasn't as wet as I expected. There are a few muddy spots in the lower to mid sections. In the mid to upper there has been a lot of erosion, sometimes to growing ledges and sometimes to growing trenches, despite lots of waterbar efforts. Having said that the Mt. Kinsman trail is still easy going for the most part. The Ridge trail has its share of eroded to exposed ledge but it isn't really slippery even when wet.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Pretty easy day for the mighty tough little dog. It started out with some humid sun, but that didn't last long, and with plenty of water for sipping and down low dipping he rarely panted. We met one other dog, Zuzu.
Bugs
Bugs: None were bothersome, but if one lingered in the parking area some skeeters appeared. On top a refreshing if moist wind would have kept them hunkered down.

Comments
Comments: The WMUR-TV forecast no rain, maybe some sun N, so we went for Moriah a bit late in the morn. But the MWOB and NOAA forecasts we got driving in the Notch said showers and even T storms so we went for this closer hike. Summits were in the clouds during and after hike. Still it was a fast & fun hike on a trail I like. We got to visit with Val and Michael, Rick and Lady Gray and others, but didn't see many hikers for a Memorial Day Weekend, and even then most of those were going up later in the day probably unburdened by conflisting forecasts.
