I hiked about 4.5 miles in on the Smarts Brook Trail and then left the trail around 2,500 ft., bushwhacking up the western side of Sandwich Dome. During my ascent, I noted what I believe are remnants of the original trail that Nathaniel Greeley had built in the 1850s:
(1) At 2,950ft, in the vicinity of a small talus slope, there is an obvious corridor with stones piled on either side (the 1876 guidebook states that this section had been “cleared of rolling stones and angular rocksâ€)
(2) Slightly higher, at 3,040ft, there is a somewhat less defined but still obvious corridor, with rocks set aside.
Both of these were short, discontinuous sections of trail; I zigzagged across the remaining slope to the summit, but was not able to find any other traces of the old path. Descent was via Sandwich Mtn. and Smarts Brook trails. |
