Comments
Comments: I hiked about 4.5 miles in on the Smarts Brook Trail and then left the trail around 2,500 ft., bushwhacking up the western side of Sandwich Dome. During my ascent, I noted what I believe are remnants of the original trail that Nathaniel Greeley had built in the 1850s:

(1) At 2,950ft, in the vicinity of a small talus slope, there is an obvious corridor with stones piled on either side (the 1876 guidebook states that this section had been “cleared of rolling stones and angular rocks”)

(2) Slightly higher, at 3,040ft, there is a somewhat less defined but still obvious corridor, with rocks set aside.

Both of these were short, discontinuous sections of trail; I zigzagged across the remaining slope to the summit, but was not able to find any other traces of the old path. Descent was via Sandwich Mtn. and Smarts Brook trails.
