We did Daniel Down to complete a redline plus we needed a date for Smarts which we climbed a few times before. Daniel Doan has a split personality. The first 2+ miles are a nice: starts out as a graded dirt road, switches to an old woods road then a wide trail for the most part, gradually climbing easy to moderate. Unfortunately, only about half the elevation is gained in this part. The last mile is steep, rocky in sections and a stream bed in others. About .25 short of the summit you reach a height of land and the trail is fairly flat following some deteriorating bog board then trail to the fire warden's cabin. From here it is a short distance to the fire tower and summit. Great views from the tower which is now open! Saw about 1/2 dozen other hikers and a couple dogs while we rested. Returned to our car the same way, a little hairy in spots due to the steepness of the trail and the wet moss and rocks. Made it! |
