Followed FR116 for 2.5 miles into the Hardy Brook valley and then left the road once I got close to Hardy Brook. After pushing through some thick regenerating logging areas, I reached the base of the ridge that runs SE down from Green’s summit. To my surprise, the woods on this ridge ended up being entirely open spruce forest from start to finish — they key seems to be staying on the north side of the ridge, as the southern side has some blowdown areas. I spent some time searching the western side of Green Mountain for the quartz deposits that are mentioned in the 1876 (Sweetser) guidebook, but was unsuccessful; will need to return some time.
I descended via the same route and then made a side-trip to a recently-logged slope opposite Green Mountain (at 43° 56.714’N/ 71° 31.880’W); here there were some nice views over to Green and Tecumseh, and tons of raspberry bushes. Great hiking weather today and a nice time checking out this area I had overlooked. |
