The McDonough that flows south between the two peaks was swollen from recent rain, covering the rocks. We searched up and down a bit and found a log we could cross to save us from a ford. |

Our route was similar to the last few trips that have gone out there. We hiked up Slippery Brook Trail (FR17). We began our whack up Round Mt. at its SW corner. Found the jar on the summit of Round.
We dropped E'ly.... then a bit SE'ly to avoid a cliff band.... then headed easterly again. To avoid a cliffy area on Slope, we aimed for a point 0.2mi. north of the summit. Woods were easy to walk through. We crossed FR17B (that we would return to for our walk out) and after more woods, crossed the brook that drains between the two peaks. The brook was swollen from recent rain, and after a short search, we found a log to cross.
We climbed easily up to Slope, and having aimed a bit north, avoided all of the cliffs. Once on the top of the ridge, it was an easy 0.2 mi. south to the summit. On the summit was a "bright" canister, a small pile of rocks, and a few yards away... a most beautiful view ledge with views W'ly towards Mountain Pond, the Doubleheads, North Kearsarge, and more.
We departed via the same route. We regained FR17B that travels along the East side of Round Mtn., and followed this south. On the USFS map it showed a small old logging road at the south end of Round Mtn. that connected FR 17 & 17B. It was easy to spot, but severely choked. So we BW'd west through easy woods, 0.2 mile, until we were back on the Slippery Brook Trail / FR 17. And back to our car.
Even taking our time, enjoying the views, and figuring how to cross the brook without taking our shoes off.... this was an easy, under 4 hour hike.
Another successful hike and fun day with JEM3, Gordon (no Reuben) and Fran M. |
