Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The road becomes much rougher once you turn off the main road and onto the one that leads to the trailhead parking (sign for “tower”). Any car could probably do it as there weren’t any washouts or big holes but there are tons of little rocks making for a VERY bumpy ride and some larger ones that might scrap the undercarriage of a low car so I wouldn’t recommend doing this in a low clearance vehicle. My CR-V did fine. No other cars there but mine. I followed a moose on the way out the road. Cool but a little unnerving as it took a long while to get off the road and I followed it for awhile (at a distance) and just hoped it wouldn’t turn on me.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None of any significance.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Bobcat Trail was littered with blowdowns particularly higher up. It was really unfortunate. It would have been a nice trail otherwise but there were so many that it honestly took away from the experience. Hopefully most of them will get cleared soon. Neither trail is signed at their start. Coot Trail starts at the very end of the road and is obvious. There is a sign about a wildlife viewing I think. Bobcat Trail starts a little further back on the road. Neither trail is blazed either but both are easy to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The trails are steep but most dogs would be fine.
Bugs
Bugs: I don’t recall specifics but I’m sure they were out and likely bothersome.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: This was my sixth and final hike on Tuesday and my fourth in the Connecticut Lakes Region which completes that section of the WMG for me :) No more drives quite that far north for awhile.

I ascended Bobcat Trail to Coot Trail and came down Coot. There is a little observation platform from just below the top of the tower but the door to actually get inside is locked preventing you from getting the best views. My memory is fuzzy at this point but I’m not recalling much mud. Just lots and lots of blowdowns many of which were tricky to get around on Bobcat Trail. There may have been just one or two on Coot Trail but nothing like Bobcat.

The 10yd spur that leads to a view over Second Connecticut Lake along Bobcat Trail was easy to see. I wasted a lot of time looking for the spring spur. I should have followed the guidebook more carefully. I was using Gaia which showed two spurs at the top one of which was the Overlook Trail (makes a loop in part) and the other I assumed was the spring spur but I was wrong. That one is more or less behind the tower and leads to a restricted view. The herd path continues a ways to a blue blazed tree and then gets more obscure. I wasn’t finding the spring. The spring spur is on the right very shortly after coming into the open at the summit clearing directly opposite the cabins. It can be a little hard to see as it starts over some brush but once it enters the woods it becomes more obvious. The Overlook Trail is pretty much opposite it (two starting points that make a loop not mentioned in the guidebook but shown on Gaia) but I didn’t see a sign for it as the guidebook indicated. Great views from the end of it.
