A very difficult hike. We started out on the snowmobile trail and walked uphill at a brisk pace for a bit over a mile before turning left onto the old trail the the Nubble. This trail was remarkably easy to follow and even had blazes. Near the top of the Nubble it climbs steeply over ledges with drop-offs near at hand on the left. After passing over the slightly lower south peak of the Nubble (which appears to be the summit, but actually is not) we reached the summit and could not even see PATN because of the clouds. Then we descended back down the summit cone and began the EXTREME bushwhack. At first there seemed to be a bit of a herd path, but we eventually lost it,(if it even continues). Then we entered the spruce zone. It was very thick, tons of trees, and tons of blowdown. It was some of the thickest bushwhacking we've ever done. It was very slow going and what made it uncomfortable was the fact that it had rained the day before, so all the branches were wet. We were extremely elated to reach the summit (#81, I think). Unfortunately, we did not get what looked like a view, because of the clouds. On the descent, we attempted at following the summit herd path all the way back down. But despite our best efforts, we could not locate it after a few minutes. We did not want to go back through that crazy scrub, but fortunately we found a slide which we followed down for a while. The slide was kind of steep and very slippery, but we held onto the trees/bushes on the sides. Eventually, there was too much water running down it, so we headed back into the woods where we were greeted with even more blowdown (surprise!) After a while we made it back down to the old trail where we ascended the Nubble again. This time we got awesome views. E.g. you can see Garfield, PATN the Sugarloafs, Signal Mountain (in Vermont), and many others. We speedily descended back to the car, very thankful to be on a trail again. |
