Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossing of Barney Brook is on a footbridge.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No issues. Note that Barney Brook Trail, a former side trail for the MSG, is now an official segment of that trail. The old blue blazes have been repainted white, and the old route of the MSG north of Jackson Hill to Jefts Rd. has been closed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure.
Bugs: Mosquitoes were fairly annoying, especially near the brook crossing.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One mylar balloon near the summit, which we carried out.
Comments: This is a terrific "backside" approach to Jackson using Barney Brook Trail, now an official segment of the MSG. There's quite a descent down to the brook crossing, then some fairly steep climbing up to the summit. Footing is soft and smooth the whole way though. 2.1 mi. to the summit from the parking spot, but it goes by fairly quickly due to the easy walking. The trail ends just north of the summit. Good views today, but hampered somewhat by overcast skies. However, the forecast showers never materialized.
