Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 25, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lot at trailhead was very large and was maybe half-full. Most hikers were probably going off to Tripyramid.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Not really a crossing, but the waterville flume was raging. I don't know what the area is like in lower water conditions, but it looked too dangerous to cross for exploration.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Kettles path was in excellent shape. Irene's path however could use a little sweeping. It's clearly lightly used, and there were plenty of leaves covering the trail in spots. Right at the flume, there's a large blowdown that you need to go under. Was also surprised to see the last remnants of a monorail near the end of Irene's path-no traction needed, and it'll be gone after this week's heat. Did not do the loop hike, but saw the lower section of Old Skidder Trail and it looked a little bad. If you do the loop expect to deal with plenty of debris as you climb up.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None today. If you do bring them just keep an eye on them at the flume.
Bugs
Bugs: Very few!

Comments
Comments: The sun never came out, but that just made it a fine day to go off to see a hidden gem! Despite plenty of cars at the trailhead, we only saw six people total, and absolutely no one on Irene's path. The Scaur lookout was nice, but I'd imagine it'd be even better if the clouds weren't so low. Hiking the extra mile to the Waterville flume is worth the effort-the trail was mostly pleasant (if a little unkempt in spots) and went through thick forests, and the flume feature was rather impressive. Exploring it would be fun, but the water was too high for that. Would recommend this hike for those who want to get away from busier areas.
