Sandwich Dome (attempt), Jennings Peak, Noon Peak, NH |
|
| Trails: |
Sandwich Mountain Trail, herd path, road walk |
|
| Date of Hike: |
Saturday, May 23, 2020 |
|
| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The lot was full by 9am. Others parked along the access road. The powerline property is posted, however. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable) |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Hikers were having difficulty with the crossing near the parking lot. We parked, returned to the highway, crossed its bridge over Drakes Br., turned left onto powerline driveway. This lead back to Drakes Brook and a very clear herd path that rejoined Sandwich Mtn. Tr. just after the crossing. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Hats off to all trail maintainers and work crews!
Trail was generally in good shape. There was a double blowdown near 43.9338889,-71.5116667
It was not hard to maneuver around, but looks unstable and perhaps dangerous. Near Noon Peak there are two sections of completely submerged trail that could use bog bridges, or at least a filling of local branches to avoid the inevitable trail widening and erosion.

| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw many. They should have no problem on this hike. |
|
| Bugs: |
A few down low. Easily deterred by bug spray. |
|
| Lost and Found: |
Jacket and other items by trailhead sign |

| Comments: |
Traction is very helpful in protecting the edges of the trail. There is slippery monorail for most of the way from Noon Peak to the summit of Jennings. Sadly, I didn’t notice anyone using microspikes. I would agree with an earlier review that microspikes are [likely] needed for the final stretch to the summit of Sandwich Dome |
