Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, May 21, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked at the basin rest stop. First one there at 5:20am. Maybe 10 when I left. Couple mass plates but mostly New Hampshire (and my Maine!)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Mostly easy rock hops. The major crossing right past the junction with Flume Slide is moving pretty good. Easy to rock hop, but some of the rocks are 2” below the water. No problem for my Oboz Bridgers but all the folks I saw in sneakers must have got wet feet.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: One blowdown just past flume slide junction on liberty springs. Easy step over.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One happy pupper
Bugs
Bugs: A few buzzes but nothing of nuisance. A lone bee hovered in front of me while I geared up on the flume summit to head back.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost a kahtoola micro spike off one boot somewhere above the tent site. Didn’t notice until I was nearly up Liberty.

Comments
Comments: Mixed conditions today! High 30s when I left the car and nearly 70 when I was coming down. I was shedding layers fast.

Spotted the herd path but disregarded it as a runoff so I meandered for a few minutes before going with it. Cuts off some distance for sure!

Dry trail up past the crossings. Once the steps begin there’s some moisture but not bad. Snow / ice started a little below the tent site and was full coverage above that. Monorail was stable, but I recommend at least micros as some spots were slick.
The ridge still had snow cover except the summits. Monorail was narrower between flume and Liberty. Still stable enough, but if you even look at the side of it wrong you’ll post hole.

Saw a few friendly hikers out and about! Gorgeous day for it- other than the snow, it felt like summer with the warm temps and no wind
