I walked up Hemlock Brook Road and took the service road leading to the cell tower which is virtually on one of the high points along the ridge. I followed the ridge north for 1/2 mile or so until I reached the main summit of Peaked Hill. Woods along the ridge was pleasant for most part, was a real mixed bag of all kinds - the worst part being small patch of newly regenerating gray birch saplings. Interesting feature was the large number of stonewalls - one of which paralleled my route most of the way. Motivation for doing this peak was I had read a report by Rocket 21 about Peaked Hill having a nice view, but neglected to note he said it was north peak. I went all the way to main peak and was bummed when I discovered there didn't appear to be a view anywhere. Reviewing my GPS track on Satellite and NE Trail conditions I see if I'd only gone 800' further I would have reached a cleared area with some sort of cabin which is where the views are. I will return in near future and access north peak from established forest roads emanating from Poole Hill Road. |
