 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked just off of Broomstick Hill road at entrance to sno-mo trail. This sno-mo corridor is the un-driveable north end of Farr Hill road; there's steel cables blocking the entrance, leaving just enough room for a couple cars (in summer).
If you get on Broomstick Hill road from Mann road, you'll pass the Boy Scout Camp, the Parker Mountain trail parking, and the Caswell Family Forest parking. The sno-mo trail is .7 further West from the Caswell parking. Everything I just mentioned will be on your left. |

 | Bugs: |
Intermittent black flies in the wetter areas; used a bug hat as needed.
I probably picked off ten ticks off my pant legs, mostly dog ticks. Pant cuffs stuffed in socks.. looks goofy, but no ticks on me when I got home. |

Sno-mo trail was wet saturated leaves and mud. You could sink in pretty good, maybe even lose a boot, but those areas were fairly easy to rock hop around. At the height of land, turned right onto a wood's road. I was soon facing some pretty sadistic pricker bushes and a short but steep climb up some minor cliffs. Watch for rocks coming loose when you put weight on them.
I then came to a woods road that led nearly to the summit.
Everything was easy, found the jar, signed in.
The troubles didn't start until the way back, where I learned that it's really just a hell of a lot easier to orienteer in the winter, ain't it?!?!
The problem you get into is it's real steep and leaf-slippery in places, so you have to find your way back down to that wood's road without getting stuck or too far off track. I got too far off track, missed the woods road completely. Once I finally got off the steeps, I resorted to going for Farr Hill road to recover.
Not meant to scare anybody off, this is actually a real easy hike. I may have to do it again, just to clear the slate and get it right. |
