This post is mainly for the benefit of the the coming weekend bare boot crowd. You will be Ok up to about the last 1/2 mile below the hut on the Valley Way. At that point the trail is steep and wind has blown many feet of soft snow down from above. Without snowshoes you will be making many deep postholes. Exhausting work. I was fortunate to have the Legend Georg and Wild Bill C. ahead of me who broke the trail with snowshoes. Unfortunately there was a pair without snowshoes close behind them who left many deep holes for me to contend with. Park the 'shoes at the hut - you will not need them above the hut but you will need traction.
Met a gentleman who came up the Airline wearing snowshoes. He reported it was badly postholed but he flattened it some. |
