 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
The Cook Conservation Area trails, where Pleasant Lake High Trail starts, are a confusing spaghetti-like tangle of footpaths which are very overblazed to the point of being counter-productive. All have the standard NLCC orange blaze, plus a second blaze of a various color. These trails all intertwine and there is no signage at any junctions. Once out of this area, PLHT is blazed in orange and green the whole way. A confusing sign at the junction with Langenau Brook Trail suggests a terminus, when in fact the trail keeps going. |

A somewhat long-ish and interesting trek on this trail, which starts out kind of ho-hum but gets more interesting as you climb. Sheep Juniper Hill (not an official name; indicated as such on the NLCC maps), has a nice viewpoint on the way up which looks over to Ragged and Kearsarge. The true summit is just a few feet off-trail along a stone wall and is wooded.
A fairly steep climb past there leads to a fantastic outlook very close to what appears to be the true summit of Jones Hill (private property) with panoramic views to Kearsarge and points south. Several other viewpoints along the trail look out over Pleasant Lake toward Mt. Sunapee.
These trails were mostly dry with just a few areas of mud. Fairly quiet too -- I saw four people all day. |
