Before the second cutoff to Champney Falls, the trail is dry with a few exceptions where muddy runoff predominates.
Once you pass the second cutoff, the trail consists of a crusty monorail/ice pack, in some places fairly deep. A concern is that n several places the runoff has eroded the base of the icepack, leaving an ice bridge that will not stay stable under warming conditions. For the time being, it looks safe but I do suggest light traction for the descent. Trail is fine again once you leave the shaded slope. |
