Peaks None, NH
Trails
Trails: Ledge Trail, Notchway, Pasture Path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 3, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There is a turnaround opposite the trailhead that people parked in or beside (pulled off the road). Maybe a half dozen to a dozen cars when I came and left around 2 and 3:30. Room for more. One car had an Oregon license plate but a sign in it that clearly stated they were from NH.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The crossings on Notchway over Carlton Brook were a bit difficult. Water was still high from the rain at the end of the workweek. I was able to rock hop but it was a bit difficult,
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All three trails were blazed in orange. Some better than others. RCF blazes their trails decently but not all that frequently. Not a problem on most trails as they’re generally obvious though as was the case with Ledge Trail and Pasture Path. Notchway is less travelled and was fairly obscure at times and also had some odd turns. Shouldn’t be too tricky for someone who has experience though. There were a number of blowdowns. Most were on Notchway and most or all were step-overs or easy walk arounds; nothing crazy. There was a large but old step over on the lower part of Ledge Trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I saw one that was off leash but was fine. These trails should be fine for dogs. Some may not have liked the water crossings on Notchway as they were a bit tricky Sunday.
Bugs
Bugs: I don’t recall any but they’re definitely out further south and are starting to come out up north. I’d start bringing bug spray and a head net now.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: There were a small pair of kids winter boots on the lower portion of Ledge Trail I noticed on the way up. I didn’t see them on the way down so I’m thinking that they were probably left there by a family that brought them just in case and picked them up on their way out.

Comments
Comments: This was my second of three small hikes on Sunday to finish redlining the RCF. I didn’t see anyone on Notchway or Pasture Path but there were a number of people out doing an out-and-back along Ledge Trail to Lookout Ledge. I decided to skip the short side trip to Lookout Ledge and just stick to the loop as I knew many others would be there and I’d already been there twice recently. It was a bright, sunny, gorgeous day although quite windy. There was basically no snow on Ledge Trail. There were some larger patches of snow you had to go across as you neared the crossings of Carlton Brook (tricky Sunday) on Notchway. Maybe a smaller patch or two on Pasture Path as well. No need for spikes. The trails were mostly dry but there were definitely wet and muddy spots as well. Particularly one spot on Ledge Trail maybe halfway or more to it’s jct with Notchway. I didn’t regret wearing my trail runners though :)
