Comments: A stunning day to be hiking the White Mountains. So clear and so calm. I did not see this trail prohibited by WMNF and there was no marker at the trailhead, so I figured it would be OK to go out. Flat section was very firm and stable when I started early this morning. Steep sections and the traverse between peaks had a lot of loose snow -- more than I expected. By mid-day the snow was quite soft and mashed potato-like and footing became very slippery, particularly on the steeper sections.
Many postholes by those that ventured off the monorail. I made a few myself.
Somebody recently did a butt slide all the way down the South side. It was equally helpful because it packed the surface well, and unhelpful because it also smoothed the surface which made it a bit slippery. Anyway, that was probably a fun way to get down.
Views of Franconia Ridge and Mt. Washington were amazing. A link to a couple pictures is attached.
