 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked on a pullout off Lewis Hill road. It is 1.3 miles from the start of Lewis Hill road. It looks like you're taking a 90degree left turn into a field, but you can also see the gravel beginning of a driveway has been laid. The telephone pole on the opposite side of the road, just prior to the turn has yellow tape tied around it. The next driveway is #713. |

|
 | Water Crossing Notes: |
No issues, trail slightly wet here and there |
|
 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail is maintained well by someone. There are yellow blazes, and a couple colors of tape on trees. I occasionally lost the trail for a second or so where leaves covered the footpath, but generally very easy to follow. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw one getting trained in social distancing today. Training the dog to step off trail with the owner and sit, and let you pass at a distance. That's pretty good! |

Nothing yet. |

I wanted to investigate these Lewis Hill trails.
So I did find the start of a yellow blazed trail that begins at the far end of the field I parked in, in the extreme right hand corner of the field. There is a stone wall and a boundary rebarb stick, with a purple plastic tip on the end of the rebarb. Yellow blazes start there. The trail goes up over the summit, passing a really nice cleared outlook view on the way. The jar is tied to a tree about head height, only a few feet off the trail. Beyond the summit, the trail continues and you encounter a couple splits, but so far I can tell you at least two of these paths pop you back out on Lewis Hill road, less than a half mile from car, at a pulloff that has been logged and has a few logs stacked in it. (I think that was 1 mile from U.S.302). So you can make a D-shaped loop and bag the summit at the same time, if you like.
The yellow blazes are facing you if you follow this approach. The are no blazes on the other side of the tree. Where ever the blazes fail you, someone has tied tape.
It was nice to find a jar this time! Thanks, Fran! Also thanks to Zachary who mentioned the plowed pulloff last winter as likely for the Lewis Hill trails. Correct, and that was a useful clue for finding the start of the trail.
Trail was just slightly wet in a couple places, but largely stable and draining well. Mud was not an issue.
Only saw one other hiker. Remember that old saying, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro?". Well, I think it's the already-practicing self-isolationists that have the edge today.
One can only hope ;) |
