An early start today to get ahead of the warm temps and snow bombs. Was able to bareboot more or less the first 2 miles of the trail, until the gradient picks up as did the snow depth. It was pretty obvious the trail was not snowshoe broke yesterday as the trough was super narrow. I bet those folks had fun. There was a pair from MA in front of me rototilling so much it would make a farmer blush. You could tell they where tired sinking in 6"+ as their steps where about 6" apart. I had snowshoes on most of the day. About 8 others out - not one of them even had traction on their feet. The amount of rototilling/postholing at about 3900 feet on is a thing of ridiculous beauty. Is it wrong to smile when you see a barebooter print who has obviously postholed into a waterbar with standing water in it? It was an absolute mess up high and the last .15 to the summit was postholed to heck.
I had a ton of fun on the way out dodging peeing trees and snow bombs. I got tired of the post holes/rototill I ended up using my snowshoes for what they are intended for: shredding fresh pow pow! I took several compass bearings on the way out and whacked the switchbacks. Tear jerking fun! It's so fun to see the powpow spraying!
SNOWSHOES. WEAR THEM. |
