I go up Valley Way or Airline 3-4 times a week and never write anything. But the recent heavy snow changed that. There was 4-6" of grippy powder for the first mile and then it got progressively deeper after about a mile. I turned around just below Watson junction where the new snow was already 10-12" deep! There were 100's of small trees drooping in the trail with heavy new snow but I. I groomed a perfect snowshoe path so enjoy it and help take care of it by NOT post-holing! I'll break the rest today and maybe come down Airline.
PLEASE bring and wear snowshoes to solidify the middle and upper parts of the trail, especially as temps begin to warm up again. This will PRESERVE the snow pack for another 3 weeks! If we get a snowshoe base down then the snow will settle and firm up again, especially on the part from Scar junction to the hut. BTW, the snowfields on the summits are firm (so far) so bring microspikes or crampons for Madison & Adams attempts; but you may beed snowshoes for the next few days... I'll let you know! |
