I would recommend avoiding flume hike for a 1 - 2 weeks depending on how warm it is, unless you have ice picks & cramp-ons to summit Mt. Flume. (we hiked 5/7/11). We turned aroud 1/4-1/2 mile from the summit because the trail, which gets quite steep became a sheet of ice all the way across and into the trees for as far as you could see. While we are not professional hikers, we had hiking boots and have done many climbs. This was the first hike I have ever turned around on. It is at least as steep as a double black ski slope towards the top and even climbing hand over hand from tree to tree, which was required up to the point where the trail became completely ice would have been very difficult and dangerous beyond.
