Trail beside Cog in great shape mostly snow free until about 4000 ft on the left side of tracks. Started bareboot and put crampons on at the service building before the level building. The trail surface is windblown ice glazed snow. It's just soft enough to allow crampons to bite in for perfect traction. At uppers elevation surface is very similar with the addition of chunks of ice.
It was nice meeting a familiar hiker today at the summit of Mt Washington that had ascended a different way. We both hiked at a distance to Mt Jefferson.Descending towards the head wall of the Great Gulf Wilderness is also very tedious with the ice but with crampons no issues at all I took the Clay loop which was also in great shape. Microspikes could be used on the Jewell once back into treeline with no problem. |
