 | Water Crossing Notes: |
Drakes brook at the beginning of Sandwich Mountain Trail is uncrossable due to high water—unless you don't mind getting wet. We saw a couple of people try to cross it on what was left of the ice bridge, which collapsed into the water with them on it. We crossed the brook via the road and bushwhacked our way back to the trail. |

Took Sandwich Mountain Trail up. It was mostly hard-packed snow with some dangerous ice on the rock ledges. We wore microspikes and were able to bypass the ice for the most part on the side of trail, but I really wish we had worn crampons and had brought our ice axes. The snow on the trail was getting soft in some spots, causing us to posthole unexpectedly at times. Snowshoes would be helpful in some spots if you don't mind carrying them. Jennings Peak and Sandwich summit were mostly bare rock. Took Drakes Brooks trail down. This trail was still nicely packed snow and easy to walk on. Had to cross the brook again at the end of the trail, which was possible by hopping on rocks and what was left of the ice bridge in the center. Spikes helped us keep a grip while rock-hopping. I would not recommend taking Sandwich Mountain Trail on your way down. It's far too steep and icy. |
