I inspected the trail on Friday when it was warm and snow was mushy, but on Sat. the strong wind had settled it into a crusty kind of thin snow layer all over the mountain. Occasional icy spots easy to walkaround. 3 wore microspikes I wore Kahtoola G10 light crampons for better traction. A harsh wind made us layer up. Ideal climbing condition with light/medium traction. Only bad spot was the icy "chimney" going up to the observation platform, but that is always icy and the underbrush makes for good hand grips. Saw maybe 15-20 skiers skinning their way up only 2 hikers and that was almost back to the base lodge. So not crowded. We all agreed (4 of us) that it was a magnificent hike. |
