We provided a ride for our snowshoes all day, not knowing what to expect with the softening snow conditions a the higher elevations but the entire hike was in Light Traction on a crusty base with about 1" of wet snow from yesterday's storm.
Followed the Boulder Loop Trail easterly to the Ledge Spur Trail then slabbed Northerly toward Spruce Hill in open woods. From SH we dropped down to the col in open hardwood. We made the mistake of attempting a more direct route from the col, probably because it was open and not extremely steep. A much better route would have been to head Northwesterly in the col to a large clear cut and then approach the summit directly from this area as described in previous reports. We descended using this line and found it much more to our liking. Once back to the col we backtracked over Spruce and then completed the Loop trail after a quick but rewarding visit to the Ledges. On a clear day, as was today, they provide excellent views of Chocorua and the Sisters, Passaconaway, the Tripyramids and the ridges to the Southwest and South. |
