overall conditions on this hike involved supportive snow with up to a couple inches of new powder on top. sticky in sunny areas and a bit slippery on steeps as it was not always adhering to the hard base. we walked for about a 1.5 miles on abbott brook road and headed up west branch abbott brook peak. mostly open logged woods with some notable spruce up around the summit and recognized highpoint. we took a line sw down towards abbott brook road and dropped down in mostly good woods. same conditions on this part of the road as we went south and turned west continuing to marker 7.5 where we turned left to cross the bridge over the dead diamond and went south towards tracy brook mountain. at a point ne of the summit we headed up in open logged woods to the summit and recognized highpoint. we dropped southwest to pick up another snowmo trail and bridge over another branch of the dead diamond and walked it briefly to a road running southeast towards lamb valley brook peak. this road turned into an older woods road which we followed for a bit before turning harder east to bushwhack up the gentle west slope of lamb valley. some notable spruce in the last 100 vertical before opening again at the summit and recognized highpoint. good open woods down towards the saddle with hellgate pond peak then a bit of steeper climbing up to the summit area of hellgate. we visited the various summit bumps the 1,888 spot elevation being the recognized highpoint. good woods down to hellgate pond where we picked up the hellgate pond trail down to the camp and suspension bridge across the dead diamond. we then did a short bushwhack up to abbott brook road and walked it all the way back out to the car. about 20 miles round trip. |
