While many hike these three peaks as one long loop hike, we had good intel that splitting these into two hikes, would eliminate bushwhacking through crappy dense fir/spruce... considerably shortening the hike. Intel was great!
Thompson Hill & Pollard: from the parking spot, we walked on snomo trails that circled around the east flank of Thompson Hill (clearly shown on topo maps as "Lower Sheep Farm"). We walked on consolidated snomo roads until we were within 0.4 mi., just NE of the peak. Woods were open and easy to the summit. We descended SW'ly toward the col and snomo trail junction shown on the maps. Descent was steep, but no cliff bands. Woods here had patchy snow and leaves; microspikes were perfect for the descent. From the snomo junction we proceeded W'ly towards the peak. For the first 0.2 mi., we negotiated through dense fir/spruce that was growing up in the flat lower area... but they weren't too bad. Once we hit the slope climbing up to the peak, the woods opened up and were easy to negotiate through. After hitting the summit, we returned down to the snomo junction via our same route. For our exit, we took the "Middle Trail" snomo road that was on the west and south flank of Thompson Hill. 8.2 miles, well under 4 hours, microspikes.
Thompson Hill South: For this peak we barebooted to the summit and back; woods have patchy snow and some bare spots. From the parking spot we continued up the muddy Class VI road less than 0.1 mi., turning left onto a smaller snomo trail by an old cellar hole. There are no trespassing signs, but it appears to be for the "land" itself, and not for this road, which had snomo signage. We followed this road for a short while, and as the woods were open, we aimed for the summit... sometimes in woods and sometimes on old logging paths. Returned the same. 1.8 miles, under 1 hour, barebooted.
Great hiking today with Bill C. and JEM3. |
