| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Starr King Road is bare dirt to the summer parking lot, which is solid ice, but it's pretty flat so it looked like it could be negotiated by just about any vehicle at this time. One car there when we arrived at 9:30, 4 or 5 when we returned at 2:30. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A couple of blowdown branches, one stepover, no biggie |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw a couple of well-behaved pooches, who looked like they felt pretty silly in their little coats. Could have done without the trail turds - maybe you dog owners could encourage Fido not to drop a deuce right on the packed trail? |

| Comments: |
Super day! We headed out relatively early to catch things still frozen. Ended up a little later than we thought, but was only a little mushy on the way down. Trail conditions were perfect for microspikes - crunchy, good traction, flat and fast. There were a few spots with water ice, but even that was roughed up enough that there was a good grip. There were a few postholes where people had gone off trail slightly, but these were easily avoidable. All the view spots were packed and hard. There were a number of Red Crossbills at the summit of Starr King, looking for handouts. First time I have seen these - beautiful birds, and eager, but not aggressive. A really fat Gray Jay showed up as we were eating lunch, and he didn't get anything. The Kilkenny trail past Waumbek looked to have have had very little travel. |
