All well bridged- the Black Pond bushwhack bypasses the main crossing early on Lincoln Brook so I am not sure about that one. Minor step overs still fine. |

Great crust conditions for microspikes and I wore them the whole way. I loved the Black Pond trail and bushwhack and found it easy to follow today- following previous tracks. If they weren't there, once you get around the pond (which is gorgeous by the way!) following a compass bearing of about 325 degrees NW will get you there. You are on a gentle sidehill through open beech forest most of the way, with great views of the Bonds off to the East through the trees. At the crest of the slope you hit a stand of hemlock and descend steeply for a few minutes to join Lincoln Brook trail. It's such a joy to hike along this trail as the river meltwaters pick up speed! What people are calling the Brutus bushwhack seems like the regular Owls Head path to me- I don't know. At any rate, look for it about .5 mile after crossing a main tributary coming in from the West. It meets the other trail at an acute angle and is easy to miss. Steep!!!! Great views of Franconia Ridge from the top today. Jogged quite a bit of the way down for round trip of 6:20. |
