Most of everything is crust out there. We hardly even sank into the snow off of the trail. Stream crossings are opening up at the bottom, but aren't a problem yet. Everything was smooth sailing up until the final half mile which was steep, with slush on top and sheer ice on the bottom. There were 2 or three spots here where microspikes were doable but sketchy. I imagine that if it were less warm/sunny up top the slush would freeze up and make these hard spots quite a bit easier. As it was today, poles were helpful in these sections, an ice ax seems overkill but it would've been welcomed for these few spots. |
