Bluebird conditions on Carrigain. Thick, hard crust made it very fast conditions for spiking, or for snowshoeing, if preferred. Snowshoes were not needed on Signal Ridge Trail, but may have made the road walk back easier. The road was chopped up and unconsolidated due to lots of snowmobile traffic and abundant sunshine. It seemed that there was more side sloping than normal, but it wasn't bad if caution was used. There was lots of fallen ice off trees at high elevations that was really not an issue, except for the steep pitch just below the summit, which was tricky to descend. Lots of wind on Signal Ridge, but super views. Had a great time with my two buds and it was awesome to see Bill and Diane S again! If temps are to stay cool on Monday, I think it would be fine to leave the snowshoes at home for this hike. |
