| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parked at tramway complex. For the first time, I noticed a "Hiker Parking" sign which specified the dirt lot only - evidently to keep the paved lot free for tramway users. The dirt lot was plowed and didn't seem too muddy. There are various ski area/park items stored there, but still there was enough room for a dozen vehicles, maybe more. |

A couple of duck-under blowdowns, but no blowdown issues. Trail near summit/Rim Trail could use some brushing. Blazes generally seemed okay. Signage okay. |

| Comments: |
I wore crampons car to car. The first section of trail -- from the trailhead through the ski glade - was hardpack with several areas of exposed ice. Most folks were microspiking (I assume with great care in places), and evidently some folks took short detours off-trail to avoid some of the broadest icy areas. Given the steepness and openness of the terrain, especially through the ski glade, I also had an ice axe in hand (old school) in this section. From the upper end of the glade to treeline, conditions were hard pack. The uppermost part of the trail (above treeline) was through an area that was recently glazed with freezing rain or similar - no special problems there, though. I have taken the extraordinary measure of un-checking snowshoes for this route in present conditions - while one or two people were seen using snowshoes -- maybe for televators, and maybe they are especially artful in the use of snowshoe crampons - the trailbed is solid and is not currently subject to postholing or even any real divoting, and I think snowshoes are more a hindrance than a help in security on the hard, steep areas (I carried them, but never was tempted to use them). Note that any warming and softening will change this matter. |
