Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 15, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Wonderful Ferncroft Lot with its outhouse (which may need to be emptied in the near future). Thanks, WODC.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Some are still bridged by snow, I could hear the water underneath. Others easily stepped across or small rock hops. Bridges will most likely melt soon.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Good Signs and blazes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: When stepping from the road to the trail, there are some big turds. Remember, we have these trails by the good graces of the landowners (and I know none of the people who use this site would leave a pile anywhere). Good trail for dogs, watch those ledges should you summit. Plenty of water for sips and dips.
Bugs
Bugs: Snow fleas.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: My el cheapo hunting season hat somewhere up the Cut Off. One of those orange stocking hats that you get for a few bucks to ward off getting shot at and to use on relatively warm days.

Comments
Comments: Not enough time for Whiteface or Passaconaway, so a little redline (Cut Off). CDC recommends social distancing these days. This was the best way to do it! Wilderness area, with a hiking partner who's always a few minutes ahead. That Blueberry Cut-off is so beautiful (Variety of trees, flat areas, steep ones, and a beautiful brook) and the cloudy day turned into a bluebird day. Carried shoes, wore spikes. Temperature and depth in some areas prevented most postholing. The first part of the Cut-off is very rutted out with boot prints, not much you can do about it. We postholed if we stepped off the trailbed. The trail was confusing right after the Wilderness sign on the way up (Cut-off), but Prema figured it out. Bare areas, ice, soft snow on both trails. I wold bring both spikes and shoes. Hikers descending from Whiteface said those ledges were icy.
