| Water Crossing Notes: |
The main water crossings across the Pemi river were very solid and will hold for a while. The smaller crossings along the Lincoln Brook trail, however, seem to be dying quickly and won't hold up long. There were a few longer hops and postholes into the water that needed avoiding. |

I started at 8AM and took Lincoln Woods to Black Pond. This portion is a super stable and flat trail, and I just wore micro spikes. At Black Pond itself and beyond on the Black Pond bushwhack, the trail became varied, and at times hard to follow. Be prepared to get some branches in your face. Once the bushwhack linked up with the Lincoln Brook trail, things were smooth and easy again. I kept my microspikes on until the base of the Brutus Bushwhack, when I put on crampons and got my ice axe out. There were folks who just used spikes, but I liked the extra sense of security. Got to the top before I knew it, and the sun had made it slushy on the way down from Brutus. I was glad I had crampons then! At the base of the slide I went back to spikes, which I kept on the rest of the trip. It was a long, sometimes slushy trip back, but Owl's Head is definitely underrated! Total trip time was only eight hours, and it flew. |
