A quiet day (Thur) for CCW Carters loop, only folks I saw were hut traffic (7) descending to the parking lot, the caretaker himself, and two others out for a day hike. I wore microspikes start to finish. The lower elevation section of 19MB was very icy with recent melting. Otherwise, trails are in good shape with a hardpacked snow base, and the only (modestly) postholed sections being between the height of land on 19MB and the trail up to Carter Dome (close to the hut), between the col heading up South Carter, and then again descending North Carter Tr near the ridgeline. No big deal really, snow surface was solid overall and snowshoes were unnecessary. Winter is winding down but the snow drifts (well packed right now) on the open areas between Carter Dome and South Carter were still pretty high, with tree tops just poking through. Also nice to meet & chat with Bruce R and Bob H at the very end of our collective hikes at Camp Dodge area. |
