After a snowshoe roadwalk on Tripoli Road, I entered the woods just past FR 614 and bushwhacked into the Breadtray Basin, staying on the eastern side of Eastman Brook. Once I was well into the basin, I came across around 40 feet of telephone line that served the Osceola fire lookout. I searched around this downed line and telephone pole for any signs of the old Breadtray Basin Trail, but couldn’t find any discernible trail corridor — maybe this was an overgrown section, or an area where the phone line deviated from the trail.
Upon reaching the base of the Breadtray Basin slides, I ascended the northernmost slide using snowshoes. There was one big ledge that I had to navigate around, but the slope angle was otherwise moderate. Once I re-entered the forest at the top of the slide (ca. 3500ft), it was slow going from there to the West Osceola summit — there were a lot of spruce traps, and I was sidehilling for much of the time. At the summit, I stayed at Peggy’s Perch for a good while and then made my way back over to the Mt. Osceola Trail. I bypassed the Middle Osceola summit in order to check out some of the view ledges on the eastern side of the ridge. This was a somewhat long day — I left the Livermore/Depot Camp parking area at 7:30AM and got back around 5 — but it was nice to check out this approach to West Osceola and to see the great views from the northern Breadtray Basin slide! |
