A light snowfall on the ascent wasn't enough for any real accumulation but did make the few ice patches very slippery. A few patches closer to the beginning of the trail are avoidable, but right near the peak there is iced over rock which became very slick today and had to be a passed over to make the summit. Like a previous report said, an ice axe would definitely make this short part easier and safer.
The whole trail was a nice hard packed granular snow/ice path, with some deep postholes from previous days to be careful of on the shoulders. Snowshoes were not needed for only hitting Jackson, but looking from where the trail diverged to Webster, they would probably be useful for getting over there. |
