Trails
Trails: Greeley Ponds Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, March 11, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Livermore parking area is an uneven cake of thick ice. Take it slow, because the transitions from ice to bare ground are abrupt and steep, and you could lose parts of your undercarriage in the process.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Unremarkable. A couple that had to be stepped over, but nothing major.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was in mostly good shape for the first mile or so. There was a huge blow down (taken care of with my saw) around a mile in on Greeley Pond trail proper, after which the x-c skiing didn't seem as recent, and the instability of the monorail proved this out. As I progressed, post holes went from an odd occasion to every few steps, to every other step. Spikes will do you fine where skiers have been by recently, but you'll want snowshoes elsewhere.

Comments
Comments: The first mile or so was on nicely consolidated trail, and micro spikes did well. Mile 2 showed me breaking through every so often. But in the last bit, post holes became frequent and annoying. Finally, I threw in the towel after reaching the junction for the Timber Camp trail. Having had no specific destination in mind apart from further rehab of my ankle, it was a good outing as things went.

Strangely, I saw a large-ish area on the trail that was covered in animal fur -- as if there had been a huge kerfluffle. But the snow had melted too much to retain much evidence of what had gone on, and there were no other easily discernible tell-tales. Anyone have an idea, please give a shout.

Photos (including those of the fur) are on my blog.
