Started up the Ammo from Base Station around 7:30am, and was the first one on the trail that morning! The trail is very well-packed, although after Gem Pool the trail becomes very steep and has had a number of butt sliders turn it into a luge track; so bring microspikes and/or crampons. About a half mile, or so, from the Lake of the Clouds hut the trail becomes increasingly difficult to follow. It appears other people must also have gotten a little disoriented, as there are often multiple foot trails up to the hut, some more packed than others. Crawford Path is easier to follow, due to the regularity of the cairns, but can be disorienting at times as well. The summit of Washington was cloudy until I nearly reached the peak, revealing astounding 360 degree views above cloud level just in time for my summit! I guess somebody up there likes me? Had I had binoculars, there's no doubt I could have seen the Atlantic, with how clear the views were. 50-70mph gusts at the summit of Washington brought the clouds back shortly after I left. Made my way up Monroe, which was pretty straight-forward, and knocks two 4,000 footers off the list. |
