Trails: Kilburn Crags Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 8, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small parking area on the left (south) side of the road if coming from 93N. Snow banks have mostly melted so room along the road too. The main “lot” would really only hold 2 cars. Two when I got there and 3 including my own when I returned. It’s such a short hike I imagine cars are often coming and going throughout the day.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail wasn’t really blazed save come circular colored disks to trees but was well marked with arrows when it needed to be and was still easy to follow. It is a well travelled trail and follows a road for part of it. It’s not obscure. There was one step over leaner I recall about midway that’s been trimmed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I saw two as I headed up the field at the beginning that were coming down. They started barking and seemed aggressive but the dog owners immediately stopped and held them and let me pass (I believe one was already on a leash and the other they put on a leash). It was appreciated. Two other aggressive looking dogs were found at the viewpoint. One came at me several times before the owner finally got a hold of it and put it on a leash. Both dogs continually barked while I was there. The owners tried to quiet them but were totally ineffective although they were kind and at least they tried. Maybe have your dogs on a leash at all times if you don’t have them well trained and it’s a well travelled trail?? They were frequent visitors. Some scat in the field but I don’t think it was dog.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: I packed out a D&D drink left on one of the benches.

Comments
Comments: Nice little redline after finishing my Franconia Notch Recreation Path and Bald Mtn trails redline. The guidebooks description is very accurate and the trail is easy to follow even without blaze. No major obstructions. The trail starts out moderate but soon eases and has a couple benches along the way. Stunning view of the snow capped Presidential Range from the top (among other peaks!) a very nice, quick little hike.

Spikes made the hike easier but they weren’t absolutely necessary but without them you’ll definitely be going slower. Packed snow/ice, mostly ice, intermingled with bare (mostly dry) trail. .
