After three short, wooded hikes, I wanted a finale with a beautiful view, but I didn't want to spend a lot of time or energy getting to it. Bald Mountain in Franconia Notch, right next to the Cannon Mountain ski area, was the logical choice. The trail is on a south-facing slope, and there was very little snow there - a lot of rocks and some (wet, muddy) trail sections were exposed. There wasn't really a monorail - it was pretty much just mushy, slushy snow. No ice until the Bald Mountain Spur. The Bald Mountain Spur had packed snow and ice in some places, but also a lot of bare rocks - enough to allow me to bareboot the entire hike. I'd still recommend bringing spikes, since there are some places where a less-experienced hiker might want their added security. The exposed ledges higher up were all bare rock. As expected, the views were phenomenal - there was hardly a cloud in the sky. It was great to sit on solid rock in the warm afternoon and just enjoy the view. It was a great way to end my day. |
