| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Ammonoosuc Ravine lot was icy in the morning, but as it warmed up, the ice was slowly turning to slush. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable) |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
The snowbridge at the crossing of Franklin Brook held very well this morning. With the warm temperatures forecast for this week, I'm not sure how much longer it will last. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
No blowdowns that I remember. I didn't really pay much attention to the blazing, because the packed corridor was obvious. |

Part 1 of my redlining adventures today involved hiking the lower mile of Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, before the junction with Ammonoosuc Link. This section of trail was like a sidewalk, and it could probably be bare-booted, but spikes could be useful on some of the short steeper sections. Snowshoes are definitely not needed for this section (though they could be needed for the higher-up sections - I don't know).
While I was hiking, I was wondering to myself why this section of trail even existed in the first place. Why not have Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail begin at the Cog Railway Base Station, and use the current Ammonoosuc Link as the official trail? It would cut 0.7 miles from the hike up to the hut (1.4 miles round-trip). And no, parking at the Cog Railway should not be the reason, because parking is really not an issue there. I've been to the Base Station twice, both on beautiful summer weekends, and neither time were the parking areas even remotely close to being full. |
