Hiked up the Sandwich Mtn Trail from the parking lot off 49 which is the steeper route but made easier by the hard packed path. There are patches of ice and icey snow along the way but very manageable with microspikes. Barebooting would be tricky in spots but doable. Snowshoes were not necessary today. Trekking was made easy by the overnight temps and previous cold weather days keeping the snow frozen but evidence of postholing from prior hikes done on seemingly warmer, softer snow days made us glad we had picked an early start (7:00am) coupled with today's temps (24? and windy) to hike. When the temps get higher, snowshoes will be necessary to keep afloat. Descended the Drake Brook Trail. All trails were very clean with a few leaners that we trimmed out. Water crossing on Drake's was solid enough but fading fast in spots. Crossing on Sandwich trail was no problem at all. Won't take long though. Perfect day for a hike. Views were spectacular! |
