| Comments: |
Trails are packed and had a half-inch of powder near bottom, gradually increasing to 1-2 inches at top. Lonesome Lake Trail has seen heavy traffic. By mid-afternoon down low the powder was mashed potatoes, but the underlying hardpack was still solid.
Up top there was minor drifting, but nothing to worry about. There are a number of icy sections on the FJ Trail that require caution to transit. We used microspikes/Hillsounds all day. We chose North Kinsman over Madison, Liberty, and other options to avoid the northwesterly winds. NK has a great open slab with spectacular views immediately adjacent to the summit. The slab sits about 10 feet lower than the actual summit, and conditions were nearly calm for us while the wind whistled well above our heads. |
