| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Well-packed and firm almost all the way. There was a 1 1/4 mile section of very heavy 'carwash' on lower Bondcliff and another 3/4 mile on the traverse below treeline right below the summit that was not as bad. |

Conditions were absolutely perfect for the attempt of Bonfcliff, Bond & West Bond. Temp around 10 degrees at the start. Started out in micro-spikes & the trail was so firm I reached the Bondcliff Junction in 1:15. Even Bondcliff was firm and fast, except for the tangle of branches and drooping trees blocking the lower part. Switched to snowshoes @ 9 miles, right before the last brook crossing & cruised up the powdery traverse reaching the summit in 3:25 But alas, it was so windy on the ridge I had to turn around in the col between Bondcliff & Bond due to wind chill, which froze my damp mittens solid. I had spares but it was too windy on the ridge to change
I returned up & over Bondcliff to below treeline to change gloves but Bond had disappeared in a snow/wind squall so I reluctantly headed back down. 10.5 miles of hiking with just .9 mile to go to reach both Bond AND West Bond and I got turned away! But the journey was worth it. I was all set to complete my Winter 4000-footers on this (near) perfect day! I'll repeat the hike later this week but snow will be softer and stream crossings may be tricky. |
