The first 2.4 miles is very flat, well packed, and fine with bare boots. Once you get to the trail junction to the summit, it becomes very steep and traction is needed. Many in our group did this with microspikes with a bit of sliding. I found crampons to be helpful. There was about 6" of powder on top of a less broken in trail of packed snow.
Other hikers we met at the bottom had come down Red Ridge Trail and reported that they had to break trail, so expect harder hiking there.
Many thanks to the kind hikers that found our dropped radio and returned! |
