Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, February 28, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: we drove in johnson brook road in thornton to a point where it presumably becomes privately maintained. there is a small gate and "do not enter" sign. we had good info that landowners (the year round ones anyway) were ok with hikers so we drove a short distance beyond and parked in a large plowed out area on the left just before a bridge.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: we made a number of brook crossings all of which were managable today. the larger crossing of johnson brook could be difficult in times of high run off.

Comments
Comments: we walked johnson brook road to its plowed end then continued on an old snowshoe track that led in beyond the last camps. it eventually petered out and we continued on an annoying breakable crust to a good jumping off point for brown ash. after a couple brook crossings we headed up in wide open woods to the summit. it took a minute to find the recognized highpoint amongst the numerous summit bumps. snow was breakable crust over powder. not too bad on the ascent if walking gingerly, but pretty unforunate descending.

once back to the extension of johnson brook road we followed it east for a bit before leaving it and bushwhacking north towards hix. more good open woods and breakable crust snow. we didn't go direct to the summit, but wound around to approach from the east which allowed us to really only encounter one short stretch of steeper climbing. easy going above the steeps to the recognized highpoint. we descended mostly in our tracks with one minor deviation down low before walking back out on johnson brook road.

this should be a good year round approach for the brown ash summits in particular as approaching from the southeast is rumored to be no longer allowed by a landowner.
